Planting for Bluebirds

Shirley Halk, of The Bluebird Society of PA, did the research, organizing, and origional paperwork on the Planting for Bluebirds information which follows:
In compiling the list of plants to be used to attract bluebirds, consideration is taken into the feeding requirements of other bird species. The list consists of native trees, shrubs, and vines that do well in PA. Exotics and invasives are not included as they are harmful to natural habitats. Shop by the scientific plant name to be sure you buy the correct plant. If you are not familiar with a particular plant, please take time to research what will work well for your particular garden site. View the specific plant link. Not all plants listed are suitable for every situation.
The last column pertains to creating a Fall, Winter, and Spring Bluebird Garden. Bluebirds will eat fruits and berries in the summer as well as insects. When fall approaches and the insect population decreases, bluebirds depend on trees, shrubs and vines for thier food supply and shelter. Wildlife foods are extremely important in the fall. They allow bluebirds to build up fat reserves for migrarion and winter survival. Many winter foods are characterized by two important qualities: persistance and low appeal to bluebirds when they first mature. Some winter fruits must remain on trees and shrubs until they are needed as food. Many fruits are not immediately desirable as food when they first ripen. Some are bitter and must freeze and thaw several times until the fruits break down and become more palatable. These fruits are extremely important for late winter survival. Plants that provide winter food and shelter are probably the most important plants you can provide for bluebirds and other native songbirds.
