Native Plant Sources

When you are out shopping for plants be sure to bring reference books with you to check which plants are native to our area and to check plant habitat requirements such as moisture and sunlight. Look for plants beneficial to wildlife. With rampant habitat destruction homeowners are encouraged to help birds and butterflies, for example, by establishing a native plant oasis in their yards. To learn why read Native Plant information by Doug Tallamy.
Avoid buying invasive plants by reading Plant Invaders of Mid-Atlantic Natural Areas before buying any plants. This booklet is down loadable online and is at all Union County public libraries. Invasive plants reproduce rapidly, spread over large areas, and have few, if any, natural controls to prevent them from crowding out our native plants. Avoid such invasive plants as English Ivy, Common Daylily, Butterfly Bush (Buddleja species), Japanese Barberry, Winged Burning Bush, Bradford Pear, Norway Maple, and Periwinkle. Native alternatives for all these invasive plants are listed and pictured in the booklet. See the Invasive Plants page.
